Showing responsibility, creating trust

A willingness to take responsibility has been an element of our culture for generations. We see ourselves a part of the community – at our individual locations and globally. We take responsibility for all of our activities regardless of whether they relate to products or employees, the environment or the community.

Comprehensive reporting

Providing full and fair information about our activities is a matter of course to us. We want the general public and our stakeholders to be able to form their own impression.
In November 2007, Merck published its third report entitled “Responsibility for Employees, the Environment and the Community.” The first report was published in 2003 and succeeded the previous environmental reports (1993, 1995, 1997) and our Responsible Care Report (2000). The second report was published in October 2005.

Local activities

In accordance with our corporate values, all Merck sites are called upon to support the communities in which they operate. The executive bodies of the Merck Group need not mandate this by decree: Globally, the companies of the Merck Group take the initiative to make this social commitment at our sites as diverse as it is. They engage in an open dialogue with their neighbors and therefore know where Merck can make the most valuable contributions.

Member of the Global Compact

By joining the UN Global Compact in 2005, we have committed ourselves to fair labor relations, human rights and environmental protection. Aiming to make the global economy more sustainable, the Global Compact supports and propagates ten principles of responsible behavior by global companies.

Entrepreneurial success starts with people. We want to achieve entrepreneurial success that is based upon ethical values and creates economic value. Only then can we live up to our responsibility to our stakeholders, namely the customers, providers of capital, members of the community and employees who place justified demands on our actions. Merck has expressed its commitment to the ten principles of United Nations’ Global Compact.
